Residency Love

Our August residency at The Down And out Bar has had some great support, including LA Ungerground. Here is what they had to say about our monthly seize:

LOS ANGELES LOVES... THE NEW ROOM RESIDENCY
Here we have the second of the two residencies we're helping with this month and this time it's our old haunting grounds the Alexandria Hotel. It took about three years and a few million dollars of renovations to complete the newly opened hotel bars. Out went Charlie O's and in came The Down & Out and on the second floor, The Mezz (two for the price of one -- we like that). These two bar/clubs are truly a gift for the continuing revival of downtown Los Angeles. As many know, it was only 10 years ago you wouldn't be caught dead seen alive anywhere near Spring Street at night and restoring historic buildings like the Alexandria only help in bringing nightlife back to the city center.

And a little nightlife is what brings us to August Wednesdays at The Down & Out. The New Room have kindly asked us to participate in their monthly reign of the club and of course we said yes. The band probably knows L.A.'s club scene better than most, bringing their synthy post-rock attack to local stages since before you discovered Part-Time Punks. While we've always thought the band would have made a killing back in the days of Brooks and Lavitt's amazing nights at the El Rey with Coven 13 and Shout!, they still have managed to find a devoted following of fans that know a thing or two about glitter rock without the glitter. We're very much looking forward to hearing new tracks off a rumored album they've been working on but in the the meantime you can pick up their most recent release Only World We Know here. Also, if this New Roomer is in the audience please us give your hand in marriage.

It's been said that the ghosts of Rudolf Valentino and Mae West haunt the hallways of the Alexandria. If they do, we hope that they stop by The Down & Out and save us a waltz this month. They won't want to miss these shows...

Wednesday, August 10
9:00PM Franco Near Death
9:45PM Funeral Club
10:30PM The New Room
11:15PM Dark Furs

Wednesday, August 17
9:00PM Repeater
9:45PM The Dear And Departed
10:30PM The New Room
11:15PM Rituals

Wednesday, August 24
9:00PM Brutus Gets The Girl
9:45PM Northern Sky
10:30PM The New Room
11:15PM Sunken Ships

Wednesday, August 31
9:00PM Lady Katherine
9:45PM The Wallburds
10:30PM The New Room
11:15PM Far*out

10 Questions with The New Room by The Hangout Group

The New Room currently has a residency at The Down and Out Bar in heart of downtown LA. Their last show is August 31st, so make sure you check them out!

The Hangout Group: When did The New Room form?
Anthony: My brother James and I formed the band together in 2004. We played as a three piece along with our drummer Jason for about a year before we met our guitarist/keyboardist Mig. It’s been the four of us ever since.

THG: What genre of music do you consider your work to be?
We consider it post-punk/new wave/pop.

THG: Who are your major influences?
Artists like Echo And The Bunnymen, David Bowie, and The Chameleons.

THG: Who writes your songs and what are the main themes for most of your songs?
Anthony: It’s a collaborative effort. Usually Mig will come in with a musical idea; a riff or a chord progression. We develop the parts together, then break it down and reassemble it ten times. All the while I’ll scat a vocal line or melody. It all kind of swirls until the song reveals itself. Then I take it home and work on the lyrics. The themes of the songs vary; some are character studies, some deal with current events, other with relationships.

THG: Will The New Room stay in the same musical direction?
Mig: We try to incorporate new ideas, while staying true to ourselves. To keep the sound fresh, experimenting with things we haven’t tried yet, but always sounding like us.

THG: What has been your biggest challenge as a band?
Anthony: I would say balancing writing, recording, and playing out. That and being a band from Los Angeles, which comes with it’s own set of challenges.

THG: Anthony who was your favorite singer growing up and who or what inspires you?
Anthony: I have always been drawn not only to great singers, but great performers, like Frank Sinatra, Elvis, or James Brown, for example. I’ve been inspired by artists who have something meaningful that they are trying to convey through their work.

THG: When people are listening to your music what do you want them to leave with or how do you want it to effect them?
Mig: We want our music to leave an impression; to change their lives. We want it to inspire them in some way; to inspire them to do something.

THG: What is your favorite song to perform live?
Mig: Dance like the Night is always great to play live. You Lied When You told Me, which is a new song, is turning out to be another good one; it has a lot of energy.

THG: When can your fans expect a new album?
Mig: We’re about half way through a record. We’ll be posting songs as they are completed, and hopefully have something out by the end of the year.

THG: You guys are awesome to see live, you always bring your “A Game”. I’m looking forward to your next shows!
